Ear wax is natural, but build-up can cause hearing issues, discomfort, or dizziness. You can try self-treating with ear drops and syringing at home.
Self-treatment
- Use Portia Ear Syringe/ Otex Combi Pack from chemists for safe syringing at home.
- Do not self-treat if you have ear pain, discharge, perforation, infection, cleft palate history, ear surgery history, or latex allergy. Please consult your GP.
- Soften wax with sodium bicarbonate or olive oil ear drops for 7-10 days, 3 times daily.
- Use a bulb syringe with body temperature water (37°C/ 98°F) to flush out softened wax, following instructions carefully.
- Repeat the process every few days until the ear feels unblocked.
- If blockage persists after 2 weeks of regular self-treatment, book an appointment with our Health Care Assistant.
We can refer you for NHS ear wax removal, but there may be a waiting period. Continue self-treatment while waiting. Contact your GP if you develop new symptoms, particularly pain.
NHS hearing checks and aids
Patients over 55 can self-refer for an NHS hearing check and hearing aid (if appropriate) at Scrivens, Specsavers, and InHealth. Contact your local branch for an appointment.
